Welcome!

Spencer Hardwick, BSA PresidentWhat began in 1977 as a handful of students aiming to unite Harvard’s black community, the Harvard Black Students Association has blossomed into one of the College’s largest and most dynamic student organizations. Through public service, political activism, community building, and academic support, the BSA provides opportunities to enrich the college experience of black students and Harvard students in general.

Our mission is three-fold:
• To promote community interaction among African, African-American, and African-Caribbean students at Harvard University, as well as facilitate dialogue between our community and the broader Harvard community.
• To galvanize communication between the Harvard, Cambridge, and Boston communities.
• To provide a forum for the open expression of the political, social, and cultural views of black students.

With an undergraduate membership of nearly 300 students and the support of over 3,000 alumni, the BSA strives to play an integral role in
Harvard’s rich spectrum of diversity while offering invaluable resources to black students. On behalf of our membership, it is my pleasure to welcome you as a visitor and invite you to participate in a wide range of events
that keep us active on campus and in the community. From our William Monroe Trotters Scholars Program in Mattapan, to our annual Renaissance Ball, I’m confident you’ll discover something that intrigues you.

Best,
Spencer Hardwick

This past week the BSA had its last meeting of the year. We sent off our seniors in a both funny and memorable way with our Annual Senior Superlatives meeting. The membership got the opportunity to vote on which male and female senior was the Class Clown, next Barack Obama, Biggest Flirt, Best Entertainer and more. Winners were announced on Monday, May 11th in Lowell JCR to a packed room of all the classes. Jarell Lee '10 and Jenn Anyaegbunam '10 moderated the unforgettable meeting with hilarious jokes and memories. We closed of the meeting with some words of wisdom from the seniors and a slideshow presentation.

BSA Prefrosh BBQ

The BSA welcomed the Class of 2013 over ribs and baked mac-n-cheese this past Saturday in Sever Yard from 1-3p.

Image

The Kuumba Singers of Harvard College opened the days festivities with a musical performance that amazed the incoming class. Next, the Black Community Leaders presented information about their various organizations. We closed out the BBQ with two more performancs. BSA members Damaris Taylor '12 and Ebone Ingram '12 killed their solos when they sang with Harvard's relatively new Black a capella group Key Change. Lastly, the Association of Black Harvard Women's Step Team showed 2013 how to step correctly.

We hope to see all the new prefrosh in the fall!

Blocking groups and friend circles put on their boxing gloves for BSA's annual blocking/friend group competition. The Block Party is a competition between blocking and friend groups to see who can come up with the funniest and craziest answers to questions about the black community. With teams from across the four classes and the various houses represented, jokes and comments were exchanged, but all was fun and games.

"Circle of Friends" and "P-Set" came out on top in the final round. But, it was the all-female blocking group "P-Set" who stole the show.
