Welcome!

Spencer Hardwick, BSA PresidentWhat began in 1977 as a handful of students aiming to unite Harvard’s black community, the Harvard Black Students Association has blossomed into one of the College’s largest and most dynamic student organizations. Through public service, political activism, community building, and academic support, the BSA provides opportunities to enrich the college experience of black students and Harvard students in general.

Our mission is three-fold:
• To promote community interaction among African, African-American, and African-Caribbean students at Harvard University, as well as facilitate dialogue between our community and the broader Harvard community.
• To galvanize communication between the Harvard, Cambridge, and Boston communities.
• To provide a forum for the open expression of the political, social, and cultural views of black students.

With an undergraduate membership of nearly 300 students and the support of over 3,000 alumni, the BSA strives to play an integral role in
Harvard’s rich spectrum of diversity while offering invaluable resources to black students. On behalf of our membership, it is my pleasure to welcome you as a visitor and invite you to participate in a wide range of events
that keep us active on campus and in the community. From our William Monroe Trotters Scholars Program in Mattapan, to our annual Renaissance Ball, I’m confident you’ll discover something that intrigues you.

Best,
Spencer Hardwick

Black History Quiz!

(click the image for a larger view)
In February, the BSA hosted an online Black History Month Quiz, where questions were posted daily and the winner received a pair of tickets to the Renaissance Ball!
After asking the 9 questions, we had a 10-person tie for first place, so the following tie-breaker question was emailed to them the following afternoon:

The BSA list, formally titled "bsa-announce," was started in August of 2004. Since then, it has been active over 42 full months, almost 4 years! How many emails have been sent out over the BSA list in its 42 full months of existence (August 2004-January 2010)?

Answer? 29,905!

The person closest to the answer without going over was declared the winner.

With a surprisingly accurate guess of 29752 (less than 1% difference), our winner is Najla T. Long '10!

Hopefully everyone was able to discover facts about our history that they didn't know before, and a special thank you to all the participants!

Barack Obama and African American Empowerment

Kristen Clarke '97, former BSA president, is now a published author! After graduating from Harvard College and Columbia Law School, she is now a civil rights attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Her work on race, law and democracy appears in numerous journals, books and other publications.

She brings us Barack Obama and African American Empowerment: The Rise of Black America's New Leadership, a book that looks at Barack Obama's rise to United States president in the context of previous black political leaders.

More specifically,
"Barack Obama and the African-American Empowerment examines the evolution of black leadership and politics since the Civil Rights Movement. It looks at the phenomenon of Barack Obama, from his striking emergence as a successful candidate for the Illinois State Senate to President of the United States, as part of the continuum of African American political leaders. The reader also examines the evolving ideals about the roles of government and the economy in addressing the historic disadvantages experienced by many African Americans. Here, some of the nation's most influential intellectuals bring together original scholarship to look at the future of national politics and American race relations."

Please visit the book's website for more information, and to support an alum!

Noni Carter '13, published author

Before even enrolling in her first courses at Harvard College, Noni Carter had published her first novel.

Asked about the inspiration for her story, Noni told us:

"I started writing Good Fortune at the age of twelve, a product of merging my love of writing and passion for learning about the history of my ancestors. It was suppose to be a mere short story until I heard, from my great-Aunt, the story of my great-great-great Grandmother Rose who watched, at the tender age of twelve, her mother sold away from her across the Mississippi River."
