Noni Carter '13, published author
Before even enrolling in her first courses at Harvard College, Noni Carter had published her first novel.
Asked about the inspiration for her story, Noni told us:
"I started writing Good Fortune at the age of twelve, a product of merging my love of writing and passion for learning about the history of my ancestors. It was suppose to be a mere short story until I heard, from my great-Aunt, the story of my great-great-great Grandmother Rose who watched, at the tender age of twelve, her mother sold away from her across the Mississippi River."
Noni originally wrote the story not intending to be published. However its quality shone though and it became apparent that the story must be shared with a wider audience. That process was not easy though:
"Inspired to touch youth the way my ancestor's story touched me, I put a lot of time and dedication into the book without the initial intention of getting it published, finished it at the age of fifteen, and finally, after many periods of ups and downs, was picked up by Simon & Schuster in the summer of 2008."
Finally, Noni shares her goals for the narrative:
"My major passion with the book, even from early on, is to inspire youth to be the best they can be, to stay in school, to free themselves from 'mental slavery' that may hold us back, and most importantly, to understand that we can't move forward unless we understand the lessons of the past. To me this journey was a spiritual journey - it had a lot to do with setting an intention, and working at it, believing that it would manifest despite the obstacles that may have stood in the way. This was my journey."
All of us are extremely proud of what she has accomplished and know that many more great things are in store for her!
